Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Promasidor Nigeria Limited, Chief Keith Richard said that Promasidor Nigeria Limited launched the quill Awards in 2012 as a platform for assessing, recognizing and rewarding excellence for outstanding journalistic work based on merit for their work and not as a self-seeking approach to get accolades.

Richard stated that the Quill Awards seek to remind journalists of the importance of their role in the society and to the society, the need to encourage professionalism and appreciate outstanding work.

He noted that the Awards which featured five award categories that were very important to the society in the first edition in 2012, this year included the best report on children and the Future Writer of the year to encourage young writers and journalists.

According to him,” winners from all the categories with the exception of the winner of the best photo story of the year will be given high-end laptops while the winner of the best photo story of the year will be given high-end camera”.

“In addition, winners will be given supplies of Promasidor products and for capacity building , will enjoy media training at the Lagos Business School”.

“But to encourage journalists to stay fresh and sincere in their career by upholding professionalism and ethical standards, this year, we have taken it a step further by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Thomson Foundation, London to take one person who will be unveiled today and who the judges have termed, “the overall winner”, on an all expense paid four weeks multimedia journalism training course with Thomson Foundation in London followed by a one week work placement with a prominent British National news organization”, Richard said.
