A melodrama reminiscent of Nollywood theatrics ensued over the weekend along Onitsha-Awka end of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by Nawfia, when the political campaign convoy of Mrs. Ekwunife ran for cover to avoid possible arrest for illegal campaign and breach of the peace in Anambra State.
Ekwunife’s convoy which was en-route Awka after campaign stops in near-by towns turned and ran on citing heavy presence of security personnel by the Nawfia axis on the Expressway.
The event which took place along the busy Onitsha-Awka end of the busy Expressway drew the attention of the villagers who suddenly noticed many cars in the Ekwunife convoy making a quick U-turn and running back to Awkuzu while one of the cars carrying Mrs. Ekwunife veered into the near-by village route to avoid detection on citing the blockade of the road by security personnel trying to quell an altercation by some Nawfia residents laying claims to the parcel of land where the burrow pit is located.
Recounting details of the drama witnessed by the security personnel and villagers in the area, a native of Nawfia, Mr. Jude Okeke said they were startled by the sudden turn of events and screeching noise of car tyres which caught their attention at the Nawfia burrow pit by the Expressway.
He said that the melee left them surprised at the reaction of the many cars with party flags as if the security men were after them.
According to Mr. Okeke, “they ran back towards Awkuzu but stopped when they noticed that we were actually not laying siege for them. In fact, they had to send one unmarked car from the convoy to come to us and ascertain why we were there and also recount details of their sudden race for cover to avoid arrest for illegal campaigning in view of the recent law in Anambra.”
Mr. Okeke wondered why desperate politicians would continue to heat up the system especially in Anambra State where it has become a common strategy by a certain political party to use multiple candidates to contest for one seat thereby confusing the electorates and after the elections cornering the votes meant for five persons for the party’s candidate.
“I think the law is a step in the right direction and should be enforced. The fact that this Ekwunife convoy ran means they are very much aware they are doing the wrong thing. Mr. Okeke concluded.
