As Nigerians are still grappling with the shift in the dates for the 2015 general elections, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has called on Nigerians to give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all the necessary supports it may need to deliver on its mandate of free, fair and credible elections on the new dates announced by the Commission.
The National Chairman of the Party, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam who made this known in a Press release he issued in Lagos, a copy of which was made available to Primetime Reporters however reminded INEC that it owed it as a responsibility to Nigeria and Nigerians to ensure that Nigerians of voting age who registered were given the chance to vote in the upcoming elections.
Aniebonam however stated that while the onus lied on INEC to deliver credible polls to Nigerians, it required the joint efforts of both Nigerians and the INEC to realize this dream.
According to him,” one good thing, according to INEC is that all the Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVC) of those who registered have been produced and sent to the various outlets. Therefore, the NNPP is calling on every Nigerian to spare no effort in ensuring that this on-going process is supported to ensure that our country witnessed free, fair and credible elections. We think this is one major duty we owe our country now. We should contemplate the consequences of anything otherwise”.
While recalling that there could never be a perfect endeavour by any human being, he advised Nigerians to see any lapse noticed in the conduct of INEC as a mistake of the head and not of the heart adding that Nigeria would continue to exist as one corporate indivisible country after the 2015 elections.
“We should all play our parts very well. Everything considered, we at the NNPP wish to remind the INEC that,” what is worth doing at all, is worth doing well”. In other words, if there are lapses that would not allow for free, fair and credible elections, NNPP is urging INEC to put them right instead of rushing into elections”.
“What is more important is for the elections not only to be transparent but must be seen to be transparent and ensure justice for all. Finally, we wish to once again call on Nigerians to give maximum support to INEC as it sets about performing its statutory functions. Nigerians must conduct themselves in manners that would further the cause of this great country”.
“We wish to say with conviction that the future of our great country is bright, therefore, all hands must be on deck to ensure that we bequeath a nation of pride to the coming generation. Once again, it is our advice that politicians should ask for votes responsibly through issue based campaign”, he said.
