The Nigerian Ports Authority attaches great importance to the Engineering Profession and appreciates the role it plays in Nation building and therefore will continue to support its activities for the benefit of the Nigerian economy.
The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Mallam Habib Abdullahi made this assertion on Tuesday 3rd March, 2015 while receiving a delegation of The Nigerian Academy of Engineering who paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Lagos
Represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operation of the Authority, Engineer David Omonibeke, Mallam Abdullahi told the delegation that NPA as a gateway to the nation’s economy has made remarkable progress, especially in the areas of dredging of channels for improved draught, laying of buoys, pilotage and towage services and collaboration with other agencies in the maritime industry.
Engineer Omonibeke disclosed that the Authority will partner with the Academy on capacity development of its Engineers through training and retraining, research, codes development and standards.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and President of the Academy, Professor [ Eng.] RaifuSalawu had told the Managing Director that the Academy which comprises of senior Engineers has developed many programmes aimed at encouraging young engineers to upgrade themselves, especially on overseas training which will expose them to best global practices in the profession.
Professor Salawu, who expressed happiness at the structural changes in the Authority, commended NPA engineers for making the engineering profession proud.
He solicited for the support of the Authority for its programmessince; according to him the Academy relies on good will and donations from its members and other organizations to run its projects.
According to him, the Academy comprises of one hundred and thirteen[113] fellows that cut across all engineering disciplines, noting that there are twenty-six[26] engineering academies in the world out of which Africa has two; one in Nigeria and another in South-Africa.
Other members of the delegation included Engineer Alex Ogedegbe, Engineer SegunAdedeji and the Academy’s administrative secretary, Mr Benedict Archibong while NPA team of Engineers was led by the General Manager Capital Project, Engineer Rufai Mohammed.
