The re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday received a boost as the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) endorsed him as its preferred candidate in the March 28, 2015 Presidential election.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos to mark the endorsement, the National Chairman of the Party, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam stated that the party’s decision was premised on the fact that President Jonathan had started a process which it believed should not be truncated now.
Dr. Aniebonam disclosed that the decision to endorse Jonathan was a unanimous decision of the members of the party across the Federation adding that the members of the party across Nigeria would cast their votes for President Jonathan in the March 28, 2015 Presidential election as well as spread the views of the party.
According to him,” like the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu said recently, you don’t change a Commander-In-Chief in the middle of war, we at the NNPP believe with current strategies now yielding positive results, there is now point in changing the President now. For this reason, after due consultations with our members across the states of the Federation, we at the NNPP have decided to adopt President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as our Candidate in the March 28, 2015 election. This is because the President has started a process which should not be truncated now. This is not by any means casting aspersions on the credibility or capabilities of other Presidential Candidates, we only believe we should rather have continuity at this stage in the history of our dear country”.
He however stated that NNPP was presenting candidates in twenty-three states of the federation cutting across Governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly.
“As you are all aware, politics is capital intensive and requires a lot of funding and logistics. Consequently, we may in due course before the elections indicate few states where there are challenges which might prompt us to enter into strategic alliance with other political parties like APC in Lagos State”.
“For this reason, we are using this medium to call on our members across Nigeria to cast their votes for President Jonathan in the March 28, 2015 presidential election and at the same time spread the views. Goodluck is doing more and talking less”, Aniebonam said.
The NNPP boss who is also the founder of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGFF) congratulated the President, the Armed Forces and indeed all Nigerians for the successes being recorded in the fight against insurgency in the north-east saying that the party was proud of the feat achieved by the military.
“For the first time in recent time, we have demystified the myth surrounding Boko Haram and given hope to our people. Now, we as a country can talk of holding elections in every part of our dear country. At the same time, we must not relent in efforts to enthrone a lasting peace in every part of Nigeria”, he added.
