The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd.) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has put a stop to all types of waivers in the country forthwith.

Ali who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen recently said there was no going to be waivers except for those ones that were allowed for namely; diplomatic cargoes that were proven to be truly diplomatic cargoes.

He observed that henceforth, diplomatic cargoes would be subjected to scrutiny to ensure that they were genuinely diplomatic cargoes and not a ploy to evade duty at the seaports, airports and land borders.

According to him,” Waivers are beyond us but the goodness is that the current President has put a stop to any type of waivers. There is no longer going to be waiver except those ones that the law allows for, that is a diplomatic cargo proven to be diplomatic, not that they are written UN (United Nation). We will subject them to scrutiny to make sure that they are genuinely diplomatic cargo.

“There are consignments that are for our diplomats that eventually, they have finished serving their tem, on their way back home after serving outside, those ones they don’t attract duty. Waivers are given. Statutory ones like that will continue to happen but things like somebody bringing in machines or bringing some tiles and then exploit relationship with government and Mr. President say approved, no waiver. He has said no granting of waiver, if anybody just come here with paper, I should go and ask him who give him.

“So, there is no waiver and we are going to maximize that because we want money to come into our own coffers so that we will raise our level too”, he said.
