Speaking on the sideline of the elections, the ASECO Chairman, Alhaji Babatunde Mukaila described the elections as peaceful adding that his committee was able to overcome challenges before it by remaining focused and steadfast.
“We were very honest to ourselves and that is why you see there was no rancor here because if you have been part of our electoral process, you will agree with me that up till the culmination of today, there was no rancor in the town, no fighting in town, there was no rowdiness and we achieved it because we were very transparent.
“The process was open and all those that were stopped, they were given reasons and those reasons were factual, documentary and they have no reason than to agree and accept the facts. I want to say that we were able to go this far because everything was done according to the book. The challenges were there but because we refused to be distracted, so we were able to surmount all the challenges in this process”, he said.
On why elections were not conducted in some of the positions in chapters where elections were conducted earlier in the day especially in KLT where election was conducted for only one position leaving the others, the ASECO Chairman explained that they conducted elections into the positions where contestants purchased nomination form and contested for adding that the commission cannot go and force people to come and buy form in order to have all the positions contested for rather, it has to make do with what was on ground.
On the eastern zone and Tincan Island chapters’ election, he has this to say,” We are going to wait for sometime because the eastern zone elections were conducted just last year and they will be in office for three years. Tincan Island chapter will not elapse until around 18th of July, 2016 and you know our elections is based on ANLCA election, there shouldn’t be any electoral campaign or activity until 90 days to the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent. So, Tincan is waiting”.
