A financial expert, Mr. Johnson Chukwu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to institutionalize and codify new laws that would create room for an enduring and sustainable anti-corruption war in the country.
Speaking in an interview with Primetime Reporters in Lagos, Chukwu stated that there was nothing wrong with the current fight against corruption in Nigeria by Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as that was the premise upon which Nigerians elected him as their President.
He disclosed that beyond the physical implementation of the war against corruption, there were visible policy changes as the President had forwarded two bills to the National Assembly on amendment on some of the laws that govern the anti-corruption war in the country.
“So, if Nigerians elected him principally because they wanted him to fight this war against corruption, I am also happy that beyond the physical implementation of the war, then I am also seeing policy changes. I mean the President has sent two bills to the National Assembly on amendment on some of the laws that govern anti-corruption war in the country.
“So, the key thing is for him to institutionalize and codify new laws that will make for an enduring and sustainable anti- corruption. A practical example is that if you are saying that the security vote has been abused, I believe it has been abused both at the Federal and State levels, let us change the constitution if that is embedded in the constitution and amend it to eliminate security vote so that beyond the fact that you could once in a while have a person who wants to keep to the rule, who will not want to tamper with the rule but we have a law that makes inexistent the issue of security vote. By that time, you would have eliminated the source of the abuse.
“So, I expect that ultimately, the President will have to codify and bring into existence laws that will make corruption unattractive or that will reduce avenues for corruption”, he said.
On whether or not the fight against corruption by the current administration is lopsided as perceived in some quarters, he had this to say,” Well, for me, I am not vast in political matters, so I wouldn’t get myself in political issues. I limit myself to where i have knowledge”.
