Frontline conglomerates including; Nigerian Breweries Plc, Coscharis Motors, Dangote Group, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Floor Mills Nigeria Limited are expected to take part in the 2nd National Shippers’ Day celebration and exhibition which will be holding at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa, Lagos on February 25th to 26th, 2016.
The celebration is an annual event organized by the Shippers’ Association Lagos State (SALS) in collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers Council.
Other stakeholders who will be attending the event includes; Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LCCI), terminal operators and shipping companies, as well as other maritime stakeholders.
Also, the Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi is Special Guest, the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mallam Habib Abdullahi is the Guest, the Chief Host is Barrister Hassan Bello, Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers Council while the host of the day is Reverend Jonathan Nicole, President of Shippers Association Lagos State.
While speaking on the upcoming event, SALS President, Rev. Jonathan Nicol said that the themes of the event are; “Approaching a New Dawn in the Maritime Sector” and “The International Cargo Tracking Note”.
Speaking on the choice of the team, he said, “The first time we came out, we introduced a new port order and that has been embraced in the sector and stakeholders are working towards a new system whereby cargo administration will be simplified. Now that they are working systematically towards the new port order, we are looking beyond problems, we are looking at progress in the maritime sector and everybody should begin to look at how prosperity will come to the maritime sector and how we can provide wealth to our people “.
He assured that the event which will also see Shippers’ Association in other States of the Federation attending will bring in a new approach to doing business adding that it will herald in new techniques to doing business and people will begin to adopt a new culture and mindset.
Nicol also explained that the event would be used to re-echo the essence of ICTN and to re- confirm that shippers would not be liable for any payment on ICTN.
“It is something that will encourage Nigerian shippers because anything that will increase cost, our people will run away from it.
“We have in our membership manufacturers like Nigerian Breweries, Dangote Group, Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited (ABTL) and Flourmills, Nigerite, Coscharis and some other prominent manufacturers. What we intend to do is showcase them and make people know we are formidable in the sector. We want FG to see that Shippers’ Association is a force to reckon with in the Maritime Community.
“Some members who do not have products but offer services relating to Imports and exports should attend; they are the informal sector, so it is all embracing. The major issue is to change the mindset of practitioners, if we are able to change the mindset, it will solve the problem of poverty, will be replaced with Service. The joy of attainment that comes with sustainable prosperity for all”, he added.
