The Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors has perfected plans to hold a Maritime Technical Summit on the 11th of April, 2016 in Lagos.

According to a member of the organizing committee, Engr. Emmanuel Ilori who disclosed this Wednesday in a chat with newsmen in Lagos, the event which is scheduled for the Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja Lagos is being organized by the Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors in association with the Ministry of Transportation.

Ilori noted that the executive members of the association had earlier visited the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi at Abuja where they intimated him of the challenges of the industry adding that the Minister on his part had earlier gave his commitment to support professionalism and development effort geared towards the development of the maritime industry.

“At this stage of the Nigerian Maritime industry, we are aware of the challenges facing the industry over so many years. The state of the Nigerian maritime industry is so dire today that we need to address the root causes of the problems. We have identified that we have not addressed the challenges of the technical aspects of the industry. Cabotage is still down because we have not addressed the technical aspect of the cabotage like the various policies had not taken into consideration the technical aspect of the industry. There is a lack of seriousness to input to policy formation and implementation at the very highest level.

“That is why we as members of the Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors have decided to hold this first summit so that we can begin to address these issues that are affecting the performance of the industry and how we can ensure a sustainable maritime development in Nigeria”, he said.
