The wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano has described the newly inaugurated Southern Governors’ Wives Forum (SGWF) as an association with advisory capacity formed at the instance of the Wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari as a platform for wives of Governors of seventeen Southern States to support the programmes of their husbands and promote good governance and the common good of the people of the respective states.

Mrs. Obiano stated this in a chat with newsmen at the end of a 2-Day inaugural meeting of the Forum held from March 4-5, 2016 at Owerri, Imo State.

Mrs Obiano drew attention to the three issues outlined in the Communique agreed to by the Wives of the Governors which include Girl Child education and child issues, Women empowerment initiatives and health issues as the main thrusts of the pet projects to be pursued by wives of the governors.

According to Mrs. Obiano the Southern Governors’ Wives Forum would encourage sharing of ideas and synergy amongst the seventeen states which would improve the pet programmes carried out by the members in their states.

Explaining how she manages to operate her pet project in Anambra State with obvious lack of fund and budgetary allocation, Mrs. Obiano said.” I knew early that I do not have statutory backing for my programmes and that my place is beside my husband, hence all I do is support his efforts. That is why I concentrated on the charity work I have been doing before he became governor. I founded Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) to handle issues concerning every group including the family, women, indigent widows, and the less privileged using the money I raise from philanthropists and supporters of good course.”

Among the aims and objectives of the Forum are; to use the association as a mechanism to support the programmes and activities of the wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Compliment the giant strides of the Southern Governors; Promote unity and peaceful coexistence among the southern states of Nigeria; Impact positively on the lives of women, children, youth and the vulnerable in local communities and beyond; and Identify and stand with members at all times.
