National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has hailed the decision of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd.) to rename the Lillypond/Ijora Terminal as Tincan Island Port 2 Area Command.
In a letter addressed to the Comptroller-General by the Legal Adviser of the association, Barr. Fred Akokhia and made available to Primetime Reporters Friday, NAGAFF described the action as a salutary move that would bring succor to both the men and officers of the Service who for quite a while have been underutilized and collaterally made the stakeholders comprising of freight forwarders and other operatives at the Command redundant.
The Association maintained that the policy move had rekindled the hope and joy of all that use the command as their primary duty post.
It reads,” It is with the highest gratitude we write you this congratulatory letter to commend your recent strategic action to make the erstwhile Lilypond Command of the Nigeria Customs a fully functional command again by designating the Command as Tincan Island Port 2. This is a salutary move that will bring succor to both the men and officers of the Service who for quite a while have been underutilized and collaterally made the stakeholders comprising of freight forwarders and other operatives at the
Command redundant.
“We say without any equivocation that this policy move has rekindled the hope and joy of all that use the command as their primary duty post. We wish to encourage you to continue to bring this kind of innovation into the total operation of the Nigeria Customs Service.
“We wish you and your entire management team God’s guidance in your quest to reposition the Nigeria Customs to an enviable Service that we shall all be proud of”.
It will be recalled that the Customs Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Lillypond/Ijora Command, Comptroller Abdulkadir Mahmud Dalhat at a stakeholders’ meeting at the command on Thursday announced the approval of the Comptroller-General for the re-designation of the command.
Dalhat informed that the command had been given a new lease of life by the Customs boss, saying that the change of name was a market strategy to attract more cargoes to the terminal.
He said the change of name was jointly pursued by the Customs and the Concessionaire; Lillypond Container Terminal Limited in order to change the mindset of importers and to create awareness for the terminal.
The CAC also pointed out that the terminal was grossly under-utilised and that henceforth, there was a plan to focus more on export cargoes in order to fill the gap of not having enough imports.
He described the command as the only one having a complete and modern export bay in the whole of the Zone.
Dalhat revealed that the command had written to the CG of Customs on how to maximize the command by ensuring that all export cargoes were channeled through the Tin Can Island Port 2 Command.
