The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside has said that the national carrier being planned for the nation’s maritime industry is being driven by the Federal Ministry of Transportation with the active support of NIMASA and industry stakeholders.
Peterside who stated this while playing host to the Management of Platform Communications who paid him a thank you visit at the agency’s headquarters in Lagos said that unlike the defunct national carrier, the national carrier as was being conceptualized by the Federal Ministry of Transportation would be driven by the private sector as it would not be government owned.
According to him,” The only thing is that it will be owned by the Nigerian businessmen and women, the Nigerian Shipowners. It will not at all be owned by government, Nigerian Shipowners will work with established core investors who have a track record of success in shipping. What government is doing is to play the role of a facilitator, that is all and I believe that very soon, we will have an up and running national carrier that will provide all those opportunities for our own people for seatime and of course the issue of the national flag and all other things that are derivable benefits from owning a national carrier or a national shipping line”.
On seatime experience for Nigerian cadets, the Director-General observed that NIMASA had adopted a multi-pronged approach to address the seatime adding that the agency had engaged stakeholders both within and outside the country assuring that very soon, all Nigerian cadets qualified for seatime experience would have the opportunity of gaining their seatime experience and earnining their Certificates of Competence (COC).
