The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has disengaged a total of 59 officers from service.
A circular issued on 19th January, 2017 which was signed by the acting Comptroller Discipline of the Service, Ganiyu I.A which was sighted by Primetime Reporters directed all the Zones, All Customs Area Commands and all Units to disengage the affected officers if still found in the Zone, Area Command/unit from any customs activities as they were no longer in active service.
The statement read,” I am directed to request you to disengage the under listed officers, if still found in your Zone, Area Command/unit from any customs activities, because they are no longer in active service, please”.
A breakdown of those disengaged indicated that a total of three (3) officers in the rank of Deputy Comptrollers, four (4) officers in the rank of Assistant Comptrollers , eight (8) officers in the rank of Chief Superintendent of Customs and three (3) officers in the rank of Superintendent of Customs were either dismissed or retired from service.
Also, a total of one (1) officer each in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Customs and Assistant Superintendent of Customs II were affected whereas five officers in the rank of Chief Inspector of Customs were dismissed from service.
Others are; six (6) officers in the rank of Assistant Chief Inspector of Customs, one (1) in DCIC, six (6) in the rank of Principal Inspector of Customs, one (1) in the rank of Senior Inspector of Customs, five (5) in the rank of Inspector of Customs, two (2) Customs Cadet Assistant and thirteen (13) officers in the rank of CAI.
Tincan Island Ports Command got the highest share of the disengaged officers with a total of thirteen (13) officers disengaged from the Service.
As at the time of filing this report, it was not clear why the affected officers were disengaged from service but this medium believes that it might not be unconnected with the statement credited to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd.)when he assumed office over one year ago that he would not hesitate to show the bad eggs in the service who are forming a clog in the progress of the service the way out.
It may be recalled that a similar exercise had been carried out by the service in 2016 and whether this will be the last in the life of this administration is yet to be seen.
