…Says action will boost port operation
The Chairman, Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tincan Island Chapter, Alhaji Isiaka Olalere has hail the Federal Government for its courage in banning the importation of vehicles through the land borders across the country describing it as a right step in the right direction.
Olalere who made this known in a chat with our correspondent in Lagos said the development would boost the operation of the ports since those vehicles would now have to come through the nation’s seaport.
He posited that since those vehicles come in 40 feet containers while some come as general cargo, it meant good business for his members and indeed all the truckers operating in the nation’s seaport.
“It will boost the operation of the ports because those vehicles that are coming through the borders, if they no longer coming through the borders, they are now to come through the ports. There are a lot of them that come through the 40 footer containers and some can come through general cargo, those that come through containers, truckers will be able to evacuate them”.
Olalere however decried the grace period given by the government before the commencement of the ban arguing that the time lag given was not enough.
“Government ought to have given them about six months, the number of people that are working at that sector, where do government want them to start their work again? As soon as the ban becomes effective, a number of unemployed people would be added to the labour market.
“But talking about boosting the operation of the ports, you can see now, you ban something from coming though the land borders, automatically, it will be coming either from the airport or seaport. If the importation is coming through the ports, the economy of the ports will be boosted and that means more business for our members bust at the same time, some people are going to suffer it”, he stated.
