In keeping with the theme of the International Women’s Day Celebration ‘#Be Bold for Change,’ the Wife of the Governor, Chief Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano Wednesday commissioned Skills Acquisition Training Centres at Ukwalla and Oroma-Etiti, Anambra West Local Government Area, in practical demonstration of her charge to the women to embrace positive change by engaging in productive ventures.
The wife of the governor commissioned the centers in the course of her ongoing tour of communities in Anambra State.
The Skills Acquisition centres were set up by Mrs. Obiano’s NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) in conjunction with the Anambra State Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women affairs and designated sub zones for the empowerment of Women and youths in ten communities.
The Ukwalla center will serve trainees from Inoma, and Owelle, the Oroma-Etiti center caters for five communities including Ifite-Anam, Umueze-Anam, Ezi-Anam, and Umuenwelum-Anam. Nzam and the riverine community of Olumbanasaa were also presented with sewing machines as training equipment for tailoring and fashion design.
All the communities are in Anambra West Local Council Area.
Performing the ceremonial cutting of tape for the centers, Mrs. Obiano said that the centres would provide new skills and business ideas that would help both women and youths in the area to be self-reliant and earn additional income when they were not actively engaged in their farms.
“Be bold for positive change and you can be the next billionaire if you put your mind to it”, she said.
The wife of the governor commended the effort of the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs in making sure that all the farming communities in the area were covered in the empowerment programme.
She assured leaders of the communities that the Obiano’s administration was committed to the welfare of all no matter the part of the state where they reside, and urged them to continue to support the government for its people-oriented programmes and developing hinterlands of the state.
In her remark, the Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and women Affairs, Dr. Victoria Chikwelu said that a lot of effort and resources went into setting-up of the centres, and praised the wife of the governor for her doggedness and support in ensuring that the centers became operational to serve the needs of the remote communities.
She noted that the centers would help in empowering youths of the area as supplementary job from farming and keep them busy from engaging in social vices.
Also speaking, member representing Anambra West in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Okoye said that the centers would go a long way in helping to train women and youth in different trades and make them productive for a better society.
He pledged that he would continue to support the Obiano’s government for remembering people of the local government with projects.
In the same vein, the Senior Special Assistant (Political), to the Governor, Hon. Collins Nwabunwanne, told the governor’s wife that Anambra West indigenes were happy with her and the governor and would ensure he was returned to office for second term unopposed.
On their part, representatives of the Woman leaders in the communities, Mrs. Martina Ajekwena, and the President General of Ukwalla, Mr. Samuel Jemigbola said that the visit of the Governor’s wife was a confirmation of better times for the people and thanked governor Obiano and the wife for projects sited in their locality and pledged their total support to his second term bid.
The Skill acquisition centres were equipped with sewing machines, Computer sets, baking equipment including oven, fryers; soap making equipment like mould, cutters and generators other equipment for training.
Mrs. Obiano also distributed school bags, bags of rice, children’s cloths and gowns to the less privileged women, children and the physically challenged.
The wife of the Governor was accompanied on the tour by the wife of deputy Governor, Mrs. Oby Nkem Okeke, wife of the National Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance, Lolo Mary Oye, the wife state Chairman of APGA, Mrs. Regina Obi, top government officials and party leaders.
The governor’s wife has so far visited sixty-one communities.
