… Support restructuring
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) at its National Convention held today in Lagos reconstituted its National Executive Committee (NEC) with a new mandate to lead the Party for the next five years.
This is as the party amended its constitution to extend the tenure of its officers across board from two years to five years to bring the party at par with the current realities as it affects tenure of office of party officials.
Delivering his address at the convention, the National Chairman of the party, Chief Dr. Boniface Aniebonam said that now was the time for the citizens of this country to chart a new course for the nation adding that NNPP offered that new course and hope which the country needed now.
While calling on members of the party to show the people of Nigeria that they could chart a new course for the entire country both in utterance, conduct and performance, he reminded the party faithful that they could not but look at the state of the party at this juncture.
According to him,” I must first and foremost commend the Bauchi State Chapter for their tremendous efforts at galvanizing the party to a new height. The leadership of the party in Bauchi state has shown commitment and zeal in propagating the ideals of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). What I expect of any committed member of the party is to replicate the same commitment and zeal exhibited by the Bauchi chapter.
“I cannot go on without telling us about certain shortcomings we have noticed in so many of our states, the way they are carrying on with the affairs of the party. It would seem as if so many executives in the states are rather more interested in holding positions they use to make pecuniary demands and gains from the state government where they are. More worrisome is the fact that even when such pecuniary gains are given to them, they use the money for their personal enrichment without putting at least some of such monies into the development and growth of the party.
“I will want to ask if any state chapter in this category has ever found out how the party secretariat both in Abuja and the annex in Lagos are being paid for and the staff being remunerated. I have personally shouldered the responsibility of paying the rent of our National Secretariat building in Abuja since inception of the party. I have also personally taken the responsibility of putting in place the necessary structures that made INEC not to deregister the party when so many parties were deregistered. We must talk to ourselves candidly”.
Dr. Aniebonam noted that there was no point in angling for an executive position when one is aware he or she cannot add value to the party saying that time had come to say that anyone was at liberty to leave the party for another party if such a person was not ready to be on the same page with them in actualizing the mission and vision of the party.
“Party membership is voluntary and as such none is compelled to remain in a great party if such a person is keen to be the spoiler or working at cross purposes with the leadership of the party. I want to assure you all that we are focused and committed to the ideals of our great party. I have highlighted some of the problems that some state excos here have been giving us. We have true within reasonable and legal limits to contend with these problems. It is in view of this that a Constitution Review Committee was set up to have a critical look at our constitution and amend those areas of the constitution that give more muscle to the administration of the party”, he said.
On the calls for restructuring of the country, the NNPP boss said,” I cannot end this speech without adding our voice to the ongoing debate on how we can move forward as a people. It is an open secret that our country is not making progress because of its current structure. So, now is the time for us to do something about the present structure. We may call it whatever name; restructure, reform, re-engineering”.
Highlights of the convention are the chapter reports delivered by different state chapters of the party, adoption of the amendment of the party’s constitution, inauguration of the reconstituted NEC members and the declaration of the party’s gubernatorial aspirant for the party in the November 18, 2017 Gubernatorial election in Anambra state among others.
