Following a letter from the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) demanding the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to issue a directive to all customs commands across Nigeria to ensure removal of all illegal checkpoints across Nigeria, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd.) has directed immediate implementation of the directive.

In a circular dated 25 July, 2017 and signed by the acting Deputy Comptroller-General (E, I & I), Dangaladima A. A, Ali pointed out that all checkpoints mounted outside forty (40) Kilometers to the borders were illegal while information patrol outside that point should not last more than 24 hours at any given time.

He noted that the 40 kilometer radius applied only to the border adding that there should be no checkpoint within the port areas.

According to him,” To further clarify these issues, it should be reminded strongly, that only two checkpoints situated at Agbara and Gbaji along the Lagos-Badagry-Seme road are statutorily approved for instance.

“Henceforth, Zonal Coordinators, Comptrollers FOUs, CACs, CIU and other units will be jointly held responsible for flouting the directive. Ensure widest circulation for strict compliance, please”.
