Messrs A.G Dangote Nigeria Limited, the contractor awarded the reconstruction of the wharf Road in Apapa yesterday defied the rain showers to commence reconstruction of the road.
The Federal Controller of Works in the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Godwin Ekeh had last week informed major stakeholders at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos that the reconstruction work would commence on the 7th of July, 2017.
He begged truckers to remove their trucks from the road to enable reconstruction work progress without hitches adding that diversions would be made so as to allow for a hitch-free reconstruction exercise.
Our correspondent who monitored the reconstruction work reported that caterpillars were seen opening up the drainage system as well as evacuating the debris and depositing same on a waiting tippers which eventually took them away.
He reported that both the white supervisors and the Nigerian staff of the company were seen working under the rain as well as some security and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) officials who were on hand to help direct the movement of the traffic.
However, the Barrack bus stop by Polysonic Mall outward Apapa was closed to traffic while same was the case at Airways bus stop by Flour Mills Plc as vehicles both inward and outward the Wharf maintained a single lane as against total closure of Wharf road as initially proposed by the government.
Speaking to Primetime Reporters, the Chairman, Joint Council of Seaport Truckers (JCOST), Alhaji Kayode Odunowo thanked the NPA for the palliative works done on the road so far adding that they were ready to comply and cooperate with the government in its effort to reconstruct the road.
“Now that the government is ready to do this road, let us help them by removing our vehicles on the road. So, we are ready, let NPA inform APMT that they should change their activities. APMT is not helping the situation. However, we have started it, we are going to complete it”, he said.
