The Lagos State Police Command has said that the X-Squad unit of the command has arrested no fewer than 10 policemen and two of their accomplices for offences bordering on corruption and unruly behaviour.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr. Edgal Imohimi said yesterday that nine policemen and a senior traffic warden were picked up alongside two of their accomplices popularly as known as ‘Camp Boys’ or ‘Antelopes’ by the X-Squad, a unit charged with monitoring the activities of policemen.
Imohimi disclosed that the squad were detailed to ensure zero tolerance to corruption and unruly behaviour by officers and men of the command.
According to him, “In the light of this, operatives of the squad have been out day and night to ensure that this renewed determination is achieved. To this effect, nine (9) policemen and a Senior Traffic Warden alongside two (2) of their accomplices popularly as known as ‘Camp Boys’ or ‘Antelopes’ were arrested between September 1 to 18, 2017.
“One of the Camp boys, identified as Taofik Ismaila was arrested along Ikotun road on September 8, along with some unscrupulous policemen, who were caught extorting money from innocent motorists.
“Similarly, the unit also arrested one Stephen Nwafor along Igando road with some erring policemen caught collecting money from unsuspecting motorists.
“The policemen are presently undergoing departmental orderly room trial to ensure a total purging of the bad eggs, while their civilian accomplices are being charged to court for related offences.”
The Lagos Police boss therefore directed that the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and their Divisional Traffic counterparts of the affected areas be issued query for lack of supervision and disobedience to lawful orders.
He also issued a warning to all executives and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to warn their members from being used by unscrupulous policemen as tools and agents of extortion against members of the public adding that the activities of this unit were still on and would not relent until the command got rid of all the bad elements.
