Former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme is dead

The 2nd Republic Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ekwueme is dead.

According to a statement issued by the brother of the late former Vice President and traditional ruler of Oko, Igwe Prof. Laz Ekwueme, Ekwueme passed on at the London Clinic at 10.00 pm on Sunday 19th November, 2017.

The statement reads,”The Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON.

“The sad event occurred at The London Clinic at 10:00 pm on Sunday 19th November 2017”.

Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme was on Sunday 29th October, 2017 admitted into hospital for a chest infection.

Ekwueme collapsed in his Enugu residence and slipped into coma at about 2.am on Monday morning and was admitted in an Enugu hospital.

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari gave approval for the ailing former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme to be flown abroad for medical treatment.

Buhari gave the approval after he was briefed on the medical condition of Ekwueme.

The approval given by the President covered the cost of chartering an air ambulance for the emergency movement and the cost of treatment.

The former Vice President had a quiet celebration of his 85th birthday on the 21st of October, 2017 in the company of his family members and had remained in high spirits up till his recent health challenges.
