…Expresses confidence in leadership of INEC
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has said that it will present a credible candidate to run for the office of the President in the 2019 presidential election on its platform.
The National President of the party, Chief Dr. Boniface Aniebonam who disclosed this in a chat with our correspondent in Lagos yesterday said that the party was fully prepared for the 2019 election and was okay with the election timetable as released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Aniebonam further said that the party has zone its presidential slot to north-eastern part of the country adding that any aspirant from any of the states that make up the zone was free to contest for president under the party.
“We are ever ready before this time, even though we are on the quiet side but as soon as INEC releases the election timetable, the activities will be more intensive. So, it is a call for duty and of course, NNPP will be looking forward to that election in 2019.
“Definitely, we will be presenting a presidential candidate from the north east; we are working hard to get a presidential candidate from the north east. For now we have to be silent not to distract the government, don’t forget that the government has a constitutional duty to the people, you don’t need to distract them”, he said.
On whether the election timetable as released by INEC recently will not be a distraction to governance in the country, he had this to say,” No, I don’t subscribe to that. I just told you that even at the level we are talking about, playing active politicking; it may not be the right time to do so for us not to distract government. Responsible person should know that it is Nigeria first. In other words, governance is a continuum and if you begin to mix it up with politics, then you are getting it wrong. In other words, APC as a ruling party of course knows that the stakes are very high. So, I don’t think on my own thinking that they will allow politics stopping them from giving the dividends of democracy as they promised.
“As a matter of fact, I want to believe that more actions will be seen on the part of APC as the leadership of political parties in terms of their position in the country. I believe they will do more now because most Nigerians are not really happy with the government. I think they need to cover up some of their lapses, that is expected of them. So, I don’t see any distraction coming and the only way they can be very strong is that they have to meet up the demands of the people as they may have promised”.
He however expressed confidence in the current management of INEC to deliver a credible election for the country come 2019 saying, “It is all about improvement, I understand that INEC as have been constituted now they continue to improve upon the past administration”.
