The management of Platforms Communications, Conveners of the annual Maritime Students’ Conference tagged ‘A Day With Nigerian Maritime Students’  says it is set to honour ten best graduating students in various maritime/transport related studies during the 3rd edition of the Conference scheduled to hold in Lagos on Monday, May 28 2018.

In a press statement issued in Lagos on Monday, the Chief Executive Officer of Platforms Communications Concept, Mr. Sylvanus Obasi said his company’s decision to honour the best graduating maritime students came as a creative and innovative approach to entrenching healthy academic competition and excellence amongst Nigerian maritime students.

He maintained that the award which had become a yearly honour to outstanding maritime students would not only encourage every maritime student to study hard but will also be a thing of pride for winners in the various categories.

According to him, outstanding students will be honoured in the following categories of maritime/transport related studies. They include:

  1. Best Graduating Marine Engineering Student
  2. Best Graduating Nautical Science Student
  3. Best Graduating Naval Architecture Student
  4. Best Graduating Admiralty Law Student
  5. Best Graduating Female Maritime Student
  6. Best Graduating Shipping Management Student
  7. Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student
  8. Best Graduating Transport Management Technology
  9. Best Graduating Maritime Management Technology, and
  10. Best Graduating Fishery Studies Student, all for 2016/2017 Academic Session.

Speaking further, the convener revealed that the management of Platforms Communications together with the Planning Committee is currently collating result figures from about 30 maritime academies and institutions where maritime and transport related courses are offered in the country.

He revealed that only students with the highest grade levels in the highlighted categories would be shortlisted for the special honour irrespective of the schools they graduated from.

Mr. Obasi however called on public and private companies in the maritime industry, including professional organizations to institutionalize the initiative by sponsoring the various categories of the Awards by way of scholarships, cash donations or automatic employments to the winners.

This he said would refocus and reposition Nigerian maritime students for academic excellence and professional competence needed in tackling the future challenges of the industry.

Recall that A Day With Nigerian Maritime Students is a convergence of maritime students from various maritime academies and institutions across the federation. It provides a suitable platform for Nigerian maritime students/youth to meet, interact and learn from the older professionals through information sharing and cross – fertilization of ideas beyond the classroom knowledge.

The event also aims to expose the students/youth to the enormous potentials in the maritime sector and how to tap into it, while also giving government, private companies and industry players the opportunity to understand the challenges of these students, with a view to helping them overcome them.

At the previous editions of the Conference held in 2016 and 2017, about 380 participants attended. As a result, Platforms Communications predicts that with about 30 maritime schools duly invited, over 500 maritime students are expected to attend this year’s occasion.
