House of Representatives aspirant, Captain Casmir Nwafor (rtd.) has condemned in strong terms the freezing of the accounts of the Benue and Akwa-Ibom states by the federal government of Nigeria.
Nwafor who made his position on the matter known in a statement he issued at Abuja yesterday noted that the Federal Government had no right to block the account of any state in Nigeria arguing that to do that is to declare war against that state.
Nwafor who is seeking to represent the Orumba North/South Federal constituency of Anambra I the 2019 general election said that to do that amounts to annihilation of that state which according him is synonymous with economic blockade of that state.
“It is unacceptable. Such a state should take total control of whatsoever revenue that goes to the Federal Government from that state. It can also seek for self-determination from Nigeria as blocking the state account also amounts to expelling the state from the country.
I thought the Supreme Court had settled this matter when Obasanjo replicated a semblance of this illegality against Lagos State some years ago. Why are we going the same route again? Is it that the Attorney General of the Federation is ignorant of this Federal action against Benue and Akwa-Ibom States or that he is blatantly incompetent?
“The Attorney-Generals of the two states should do the needful in the circumstance. The National Assembly should also call the Federal Government to order. EFCC has no right to hunt down any state government in a true federalism”, he said.
He continued,” This again is a pointer to the urgency of restructuring this Country. In a true federalism, this madness shouldn’t occur and if it does, it should be a ground for the federating unit to leave the union. You can’t be in a union where your economic growth is stifled by the Federal might and your people subjected to starvation and poverty, yet you remain in it. It’s high time we defined this union. Enough is enough!”
