… Harps on standard operational guidelines
Lagos State Government has served final contravention notices to some car wash operators along WEMPCO Road and Akilo Road, Ogba in Ifako-Ijaiye for violating planning and standard operational guidelines in the State.
Acting General Manager of Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASPEMA), Engr. Olanrenwaju Kazeem who issued the notices on Monday during a monitoring exercise said that the exercise also serves as a warning to owners of other car wash services whose activities threaten the State’s environmental sustainability drive.
He stated that if the affected operators fail to adhere strictly to the stipulated guidelines as well as the provision of the State’s physical and urban development laws within seven days, as contained in the notices, the government would be left with no option than to seal such facility.
Kazeem said the exercise was necessary to ensure that operators align with the Smart City initiative of the State government, explaining that the action was necessitated by the need to curb misuse of open incidental spaces and to also enhance the aesthetics of the State.
In his words “The State government will continue to sanction car wash operators whose facilities violate the State’s Urban & Regional Planning and Development Law 2010 through notices on contravention, stop work order and closure”.
The Acting General Manager bemoaned the rate at which car wash businesses are springing up in different parts of the State, stressing that if the practice is not standardised, the urban regeneration plans of the State government would amount to efforts in futility.
He promised to continue the exercise and cascade it to other parts of the State, just as he advised those who want to venture into car wash business to seek information on necessary operational guidelines and ensure that their operations do not impede human and vehicular movement as well as ensure that drainages, canals and roads are kept clean.
