The governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano has granted state pardon to ten inmates serving various jail terms at the Aguata Prisons, Ekwulobia.
The governor disclosed this yesterday when along with his wife, Chief Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano and other stakeholders worshipped with the inmates at the prison facility.
Gov. Obiano in his remarks, said although it is a federal government facility, his government would be supporting it with operational vehicles, transformers for electricity, as well as other logistics.
Earlier in a homily, the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Jonas-Benson Okoye reminded the inmates that the worst form of imprisonment is the spiritual imprisonment and urged them to utilize their stay in incarceration to make their ways right with God.
The Assistant Controller of Prisons in-charge of Aguata, Mr. Patrick Ubenyi solicited for increased assistance towards building an effective and efficient penal system in the State.
Some stakeholders including the Member representing Aguata I constituency in the State House of Assembly, Chief Iyke Umenwa, his Njikoka II counterpart, Sir Pete Ibida and Chief Titus Anigbogu commended the governor and his wife for identifying with the inmates and admonished Christians to constantly visit prisoners especially during festive periods to extend love to them.
Some of the inmates numbering about twenty received the Sacrament of Confirmation during the mass by the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Jonas Benson Okoye.
Bags of rice, tubers of yam, mosquito nets, toiletries, bags of sachet water among others items were donated to the prison authority by Gov. Obiano.
