…As Police seek evidence over alleged firing at people by officer
The Lagos State Police command has dismissed the Police Sergeant who shot and killed a school girl at Ikorodu area of the state recently.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu who disclosed this at a press briefing in Lagos yesterday assured that the said officer had been taken into custody by the command.
Muazu stated that the command, having completed the trial of the Police man, had dismissed him from the Force and handed him over to the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID) for prosecution assuring that the ex-Police officer would be charged to Court on or before next week.
In his words,” In the recent past, we had an ugly incident in Ikorodu where a Police Sergeant shot at a school girl and the school girl unfortunately lost her life. I want to use this medium to assure you and Lagosians that that Police officer is right now in custody. We have finished his official trial; he has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and was handed over back to the State CID for prosecution.
“The DC CID is here, she can confirm that and we assure you that if he is not charged to Court before Friday, certainly, next week, he will face the music for murder, for killing that innocent school child”.
He assured that no Police officer would go out of his way to engage in illegality and heinous crimes and go scot free saying, “we have been doing that and we will continue to do that”.
Speaking on the alleged firing at some people by a Police officer in Ikorodu, the CP stated that he was aware of the allegation saying that he had asked the complainants to come forward and give more information to enable the command identify the Police officer and take the necessary action, which according to him, he was yet to receive any.
“But I want to remind us on that day that some hoodlums who wanted to take the law into their hands and went to the Police Station at Ikorodu with the intention of vandalizing or even burning down the Police Station which our Police officers stood by and repelled those hoodlums.
“It was after the incident that I got the report that someone was shot but I urged them to come forward and give me the details but so far, nobody has come. So far, I just consider that as a rumour because there is no evidence from anybody that a Police officer shot at anybody”, he said.
While insisting that the command would not condone indiscipline and illegal activities by its officers and that he cannot as the Commissioner of Police vouch for every Police rank and file in Lagos, he however called on the public to volunteer credible information to the command to assist it enforce discipline in the officers.
He added,” Where you see these behaviours, please let us know. We are here for you and with your cooperation; we can sanitize those among us that are recalcitrant. So, if you see our Policemen misbehaving anywhere, let the command know, we are always here to listen to you and we are always ready to take those Police officers through our disciplinary procedures and we show them the way out of the Police force.
