Officers who shot Kolade Johnson now in custody – Police

The Lagos State Police command has said that it has taken into custody the Police team suspected to have been involved in shooting Kolade Johnson while viewing football match in the Mangoro area of the state.

It will be recalled that Johnson, a resident of Onipetesi in the Mangoro area of Lagos, was killed by a stray bullet from the operatives of the anti-cultism unit of the State Police command who raided the area on Sunday.

Report has it that Johnson had gone to watch football match when he was hit by a stray bullet sparking of protest from the residents of the area.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Bala Elkana in a release on Monday confirmed that members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting had since been arrested and were currently in Police custody undergoing interrogation even as he said that they would be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures and may be prosecuted in conventional Court if implicated by ongoing investigation.

Elkana recalled that the command had on the 31st of March, 2019 at about 5.05pm received a distress call that Lagos- Abeokuta Express Way had been blocked by some angry youths who were protesting the shooting of one Kolade Johnson, Male, of No.1 Beco Street, Onipetesi, Mangoro Bus Stop by a team of Policemen from Anti Cultism unit.

He disclosed that a team of policemen from the Rapid Response Squads and Metro patrol were promptly drafted to the scene adding that the account of eye witnesses helped in identifying the team which fled the scene immediately after the incident.

“Members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting have since been arrested and are currently in Police custody undergoing interrogation. They will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, and may be prosecuted in conventional Court if implicated by ongoing investigation.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu mni calls for calm, assuring that justice will prevail in this case. The Commissioner of Police also condoles with the family, friends and well-wishers of Kolade Johnson. The CP has promised to initiate far reaching reforms to help in repositioning the Anti-Cultism Squad for effective service delivery, particularly in areas of respect for Human Rights and proficiency in the use of firearms.
