Police nab armed robbery suspect in church retreat ground, recover firearms

The Lagos State Police command has arrested one Wasiu Kamarudeen, 19, of No. 8 Olaniyi Street; Iyalode Ilogbo believed to be the ring leader of a three man gang that stormed a church retreat ground with intent of robbing worshippers.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Bala Elkana who disclosed this on Sunday in Lagos said that Ilemba Hausa Police Station 6.20am on the 31st August, 2019, received a distress call from St. Patrick Catholic Renewal Church, Jakande Opened Field, that one motorcycle was sighted conveying three passengers into the camp ground in a suspicious manner.

According to Elkana, the passengers mingled amongst the worshipers who were attending three days retreat with intent to dispossess worshippers of their valuables such as handsets, cash among others.

He said,” On the strength of the information, patrol teams were deployed to the scene. The ring leader identified as Wasiu Kamarudeen, 19 years old of No 8 Olaniyi Street, Iyalode Ilogbo was arrested and one locally made short Gun with one live cartridge was recovered from him.

“Their operational motorcycle with registration number OGUN AKM 749 WP was recovered.

“The command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has launched a manhunt of the remaining two suspects. Investigation is ongoing and the case will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.”
