Over 1,200 migrants died on the Mediterranean Sea in 2019 – Report

A report released on Tuesday in commemoration of the International Migrants Day to be celebrated tomorrow has revealed that over 1,200 migrants perished on the Mediterranean Sea in the outgoing year, 2019.

The report had it that almost 120,000 migrants arrived in Europe through irregular migration in 2019.

It put the number of international migrants globally in 2019 at 272 million representing about 3.5 percent of the world’s population.

While noting that 52 percent of the international migrants were male and 48 percent female, I added that 3. 74 percent of all international migrants were of working age (20–64 years).

The report also revealed that the top three origins of international migrants were India which account for 17.5 million, Mexico and China with 11.8 million and 10.7 million respectively.

“More than half of all international migrants (141 million) lived in Europe and Northern America. The United States of America is the top destination country with 51 million international migrants which is 19 percent of the global migration rate.

“Germany and Saudi Arabia hosted the second and third highest number of migrants worldwide (around 13 million each)”, the report said.

While stating that international remittances increased to 689 billion Dollars in 2019, it added that the top three remittance recipients were India with USD 78.6 billion, China with USD 67.4 billion and Mexico USD 35.7 billion.

“There are over 20.4 million refugees around the world. 52 percent of the global refugee population is under 18 years of age.

“The number of internally displaced persons due to violence and conflict reached 41.3 million in 2019”, it declared.
