… Vows to bring perpetrators to book
The Commissioner of Police Anambra State, CP John Abang has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka to carry out discreet investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the clash between Urum and Achalla communities in Awka North Local Government Area of the state and bring the perpetrators to book.
Confirming the development in a statement in Awka yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Haruna Mohammed noted that at about 1pm on Monday, a distress call was received by the command that some youth in large number allegedly from Achalla invaded Urum community with offensive weapons and razed down three buildings, damaged other buildings by destroying louvre glasses and other structures.
Mohammed informed that following the distress call, the command quickly dispatched joint Police teams comprising Police Mobile Force Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other conventional units led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP David Iloyanomon.
He added that the situation was brought under control, while joint patrol was still ongoing to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
“Meanwhile, extent of damage and injuries sustained has not yet being ascertained but the Commissioner of Police, CP John B.Abang, fdc has directed the DC State CID Awka to carry out discreet investigation in order to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident and bring perpetrators to book”, he said.
It would be recalled that on the 15 May, 2020, the Commissioner of Police summoned all stakeholders in the two warring communities over the looming crisis concerning land dispute which both communities were laying claim of ownership. The CP waded into the matter and warned both parties to maintain peace and explore all the legal avenues to resolve their grievances without resorting to violence.
However, despite the Commissioner of Police intervention and warning, the two warring communities had on 27 May, 2020 engaged themselves in a fight over same land matter.
