The Nigeria Police Medical Services domiciled in the Anambra State Police command has yielded to the demands of various stakeholders to introduce Police Sexual Assault Referral Centre (P-SARC) within the command.
This was sequel to a consultative meeting with the Anambra State Police command, Directorate of Women Affairs, Human Rights and other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
According to a statement in Awka on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police command, SP Haruna Mohammed, the centre was aimed at providing services to people who have experienced rape and sexual violence.
The statement added that the centre would also provide immediate medical, psychological, or emotional support needed by the victims adding that a well trained rape crisis centre support workers would be there to meet and discuss with the victims.
Other services rendered by the group include; medical examination and treatment for any injuries, emergency contraception, checking for sexually transmitted infections and emotional support.
Others include; post exposure prophylaxis, collection of forensic evidence for legal purposes, follow-up care, counseling and rehabilitation as well as providing useful information and maintaining forensic data on sexual offences.
