…Emphasizes on preventive measures
Concerned over the recent upsurge in cases of fire incidents which has now become almost a daily occurrence in the State beginning from last week, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP John Abang has urged Ndi Anambra and residents alike to endeavour to take precautionary measures in order to avert or minimize cases of fire outbreaks during this Harmattan period.
The CP who stated that statistics by the command showed that the major causes of fire incidents in Anambra State were basically Harmattan season, bush burning, electricity, careless handling of gas cooker, over-speeding and reckless driving by truck drivers among others also expressed regrets over the recent upsurge of fire incidents starting from 21st January, 2021.
Abang however cautioned the public against bush burning and reckless driving especially by trucks laden with inflammable substances and overloading which incessantly cause electric sparks when in contact with Enugu Electricity Distribution Company’s cables hovering across the highways.
He further enjoined residents in the state to always switch off all electronic appliances in their homes, business premises and various offices when not in use to avoid electric power surge which could result in fire outbreaks.
It will be recalled that, between 21st January and date, the command according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police command, CSP Haruna Mohammed, has recorded about Six cases(6) cases of fire incidents officially reported as follows;
One filling Station and a shop burnt in Otolo Nnewi when a tanker laden with gas was gutted by fire while discharging its content on 22nd January, 2021, six shops burnt down on the 23rd January, 2021 also at Owerri road Nnewi and one elderly woman namely; Mrs. Salome Onyinye, aged 87year burnt to death inside her apartment at No. 5 Okumo Ofordile Street, 3-3 area in Oyi Local Government Area on the 23rd January, 2021.
Other places affected by fire incidents within the week were Awka and Onitsha while a tanker laden with fuel (PMS) fell down at Ugwu-Nwasike and nearly caught fire but was prevented by prompt response of firefighters.
The statement added that the resultant effects of the above cases of fire incidents included loss of life, injuries to persons and destruction of buildings and numerous properties worth millions of Naira, thereby subjecting the victims to untold hardships.
