The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has concluded arrangements in hosting its annual Press Freedom Awards ceremony.
Briefing newsmen in an elaborate Press Conference which took place at the conference hall of NUJ National Secretariat, the National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo described the forthcoming event as a double barrel event as it is expected to be a combination of year 2020 and 2021 editions.
The NUJ National President explained that the 2020 edition of the event could not hold due to outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and its attendant challenges which took the greater part of the year.
The President explained that the Awards event is an annual event by the NUJ, being put in place to encourage Journalists and associates who have contributed in no small measure in the propagation and enhancement of Freedom of the Press in Nigeria.
The NUJ President, Comrade Isiguzo lamented various challenges and hardship facing members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm in their day to day activities, including kidnapping, assassination of Journalists, harassment by the government and law enforcement agencies, propagation of draconian laws, lack of access to information, including low wages and other economic factors.
The President revealed that the upcoming event which shall be in seven categories is expected to hold at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja on the 4th of May, 2021.
According to the NUJ President, dignitaries across the country and beyond are expected to grace the epoch making event which is expected to be beamed live on various platforms of the media.
Present at the Press briefing include the NUJ National Secretary, Mallam Shuaibu Usman Leman, two assistant National Secretaries of the secretariat, the FCT Council Chairman of the NUJ, Consultants to the event including reporters from the print, electronics and social media.
