The Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD) held her monthly medical interactive session at the sickle cell home, Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State to encourage members on the need to be health conscious and to forestall frequent crisis episode.
The medical team from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, was led by Dr. Chijioke Egbunike, a hematologist, with a team of pediatrician, physiotherapist, lab scientist and nurses to attend to various health needs in sickle cell management and also carry out a comprehensive laboratory tests that would assist them for an improved sickle cell diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Egbunike encouraged sickle cell patients to avail themselves of the weekly clinic held every Tuesday at NAUTH, Nnewi where a team of hematologist and other medical practitioners are always on standby to attend to their various health needs. He advised them against self-medication and to seek help immediately whenever they notice a change in their body system. He cautioned against ignoring urine and eyes colouration as a sign of dehydration that would lead to crisis.
In the same vain, a political pressure group from Agulu, The Great Agulu Eminent Forum, stormed the sickle cell home laddened with food items for the sickle cell orphans. The group was led by their astute national president, Amb. Sir Chief Chigbo Anyaeche (Akajiugo Agulu) and other eminent persons which includes Hon. Com. Azubuike Imoka (Okwuoto Agulu), Hon. Uchenna Ezekunie (Enyi) among others.
Chief Chigbo Anyaeche expressed the group’s satisfaction over the activities of APLSCD in sickle cell sensitization and also providing care for children afflicted with the scourge. He mentioned their willingness to partner with the association in these key areas while welcoming them to Agulu, the land of peace and prosperity.
Akajiugo also provided words of encouragement to the patients not to relent or lose hope in life since sickle cell disease is not a death sentence. He later advised them to follow doctors’ prescriptions religiously in order to achieve maximum result in their health management.
The national coordinator of APLSCD, Mrs. Aisha Edward Maduagwu, was elated about the visit and thanked both Dr. Egbunike and the Great Agulu Eminent Forum for their wonderful visitation to encourage persons living with sickle cell disease. She expressed her readiness to continue soldiering on with her sickle cell advocacy for a lasting impact that would change how sickle cell is perceived in the society.

The interactive session ended in jubilation as four (4) orphaned members of the association were selected and announced as beneficiaries of the monthly welfare support by Chief Ebuka Onyemelukwe, a philanthropist and a regular supporter of the Sickle Cell Orphanage Home Agulu. He is also an eminent son of Igbo-Ukwu in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
