In continuation of its safety awareness campaign program, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) yesterday embarked on life jacket donation exercise. Four hundred (400) life jackets of various sizes were donated to ferry passengers, school children and boat operators.
The exercise took place at Ebute-Ero, Sabokoji, Liverpool, Temidire and Coconut jetties in CMS and Apapa areas of Lagos state.
The General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel in a statement said that the donation was part of government’s effort to ensure adequate safety of all waterways users, especially during the rainy season.
He noted that since Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s assumption of office as governor of Lagos State, there have been reduced cases of boat mishaps on the waterways. This success story, according to LASWA GM was due to the massive investment the current administration puts into the waterways sub-sector, especially in safety improvement and awareness.
The LASWA General Manager also warned boat operators to always drive with caution and ensure all passengers adequately put on their life jackets before boarding while also checking out for the weather conditions before sailing during this rainy season.
Mr. Oluwadamilola reiterated the state government’s commitment towards ensuring safe, prosperous and viable waterways in Lagos State.
