Prominent northern elders that met over the weekend have resolved to support a southeast presidential candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a credible source in the group has revealed.
The top Northern power broker who spoke to our correspondent explained that the issue of a southeast presidential candidate in the opposition party in 2023 has become an issue of urgent national importance if the country is to remain together.
The source who pleaded anonymity said that consultations will soon reach final stage in which all the northern presidential aspirants will be invited and “we will appeal to them to abandon their presidential aspirations and endorse a credible presidential aspirant from the southeast.”
The source added that, “the issue of a southeast presidential candidate in the PDP is an issue of urgent national importance if we really want a united Nigeria.”
“We are at final stages of our meetings where our decision will be conveyed to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Governor of Sokoto state, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed for them to dump their aspirations and support the credible southeast presidential aspirant.
“All the stakeholders are fully involved in this consultation before we go to the public domain regarding our resolution,” the northern elder said.
He added, “what we are doing is for the sake of fairness, equity and Justice. The southeast has been our political ally since independence, they have always supported our candidates and so in good conscience, the time has come for us to cede the PDP ticket to the southeast.”
The Source also said that many prominent PDP NEC members have voiced their support for a southeast candidate, adding that “PDP needs to evolve a strategy to consolidate its strengths in the South as it currently controls more states in the south.
“Picking our presidential candidate from the North will be catastrophic for our party because party faithful and independent voters may abstain from the polling booths thereby giving the APC a further lead in the south in terms of the number of states.”
