The Transition Committee Chairman, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Sir Ogo Ekwueme was confirmed by the Anambra State House of Assembly on July 29, 2022. As a follow up to the confirmation by the members of the State Assembly, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State inaugurated him and 20 others on the 2nd of August, 2022 at the Council Chamber, Government House, Awka.
On the 5th of August, 2022, the new Mayor of Orumba North Local Government Area reported for duty at the Local Government headquarters located at Ajalli and was immediately ushered into the Council hall where he handed over his activities and actions in the next three months over to God with Venerable Dr. Steve Nnadi of the Oko Archdeaconry and Venerable Ifeanyi Ogbueli of Amiyi Archdeaconry both of the Anglican Communion leading the prayer session.
Thereafter, Ekwueme addressed the enthusiastic staff of the Local Government Secretariat where he called for their support to enable him succeed in his new mandate promising to transform the local government into three top best local governments in the state.
He was later taken round the Secretariat where frowned at the state of infrastructure at the Secretariat with overgrown bushes littering round the whole places. He, there and then, directed the Head of Works Department to ensure that the overgrown grasses were cut down. At the same time, he directed that the Secretariat be cleaned up and cobwebs around the entire building be removed. He equally directed and provided money for the electronic gadgets like computer, photocopying machine, printers and so on at the Secretariat which have been abandoned overtime be fixed and a casual staff be employed immediately to operate them so that some critical documents of the Local Government will be typed and produced in house as against the initial practice of exposing such sensitive documents to the public at the business centres.
Shortly after, he held meeting with the Head of Local Government Administration of the Local Government and Heads of Departments where he extended his hands of fellowship to them urging them to work in tandem with him to reposition the local government.
One week down the line, the grasses which had overtaken the Secretariat has been cut thus giving the area a new look. Staff had been engaged to clean up the Secretariat and all the cobwebs removed. A casual computer operator was hired through a transparent process after interviewing five applicants that indicated interest for the job. The electronic gadgets have been fixed with all of them working excellently well. An electrician was engaged within the week to fixed the electrical faults in the Chairman’s office thereby making the office more conducive for the Transition Committee Chairman to carry out his duty effectively.
The Transition Committee Chairman on Wednesday last week inaugurated the members of the Transition Committee with a charge on them to give their best and take charge of their various Wards so as to drive the Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo vision for Ndi Anambra at the grassroots level.
On Thursday, he met with the Divisional Police Officer of Ajalli Division and the Station Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC where he promised to assist them tackle their operational challenges with the intent to ensure safety and lives of the people within the Local Government. He equally met with the Woman Development Officer for the Local Government where he enquired to know the activities of her unit in the past few months and her plans for the women in the remaining months of the year.
He, thereafter inspected the Secretariat hall where he frowned at the dilapidated nature of the seats inside the hall and directed one of his aides to ensure that a carpenter is engaged to rework the cushions and ordered for a purchase of 70 pieces of plastic seats for use in the hall and at the Chairman’s waiting room. He further directed that the door to the waiting room which hitherto was pull down be fixed immediately while equally directing that the curtains at the Chairman’s waiting room be removed and subsequently replaced.
He further sent his staff and aides to visit and inspect the Government land at Ufuma abandoned for a long time with individuals now encroaching on it, to ascertain the viability of the land for agricultural purposes and productive engagement of the women and Youths in line with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s vision to return Anambra State to the path of massive food production for the state and for export. On receiving the report of the inspection team, he put machinery in motion towards recovering the land and utilizing it for the benefits of the people of the area.
He directed that the cutting of the overgrown grasses in and around the Local Government Secretariat be sustained until the whole environment is cleared of those grasses and cleanliness restored.
On Saturday, the Chairman met with members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA Oko Wards 1 and 2. He revealed that the meeting was summoned to communicate his appointment to members of his immediate community and to fraternize with them as well as chart a positive approach to restructuring the party in the two Wards.
He urged them to close ranks, eschew bitterness and rancour and set aside their differences in the overall interest of the party especially in the build up of the 2023 general elections.
