A non governmental organization popularly known as BAOBAB for Women Human Right has promised to do its best in seeing that all laws protecting the Rights of Women, improve against Sexual Gender Base Violence in Jigawa state are strictly observed and fully implemented.
This was disclosed by the consultant of the program, Barrister Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim during a one-day focused group discussion with Civil Society Organizations and media held at New Secretariat Dutse.
She explained that the BAOBAB embarked in research on the Status of Women in Kano, Bauchi and Jigawa States with regard to the phenomenon of SGBV and the laws preventing such violence.
According to her, the Focused Group meeting discussed the level of the protection of Women and Girls from SGBV based on the VAPP Act 2015 and Muslim Laws.
“The Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act is a law that guarantees protection of women and girls from all forms of violence in Nigeria. Muslim laws also make provision for such protection to cater for women in Muslim majority communities”, she said.
Barrister Huwaila said the discussion will therefore help BAOBAB on gathering information on the level of understanding of these provisions, the status of women with regard to the provisions and especially the nexus between the VAPP Act and Muslim laws.
She therefore assured that the BAOBAB will gladly use the findings to reduce the level of sexual gender violences against women in the states.
