Publicity Over Seizures, Revenue Target Unnecessary, NAGAFF Chieftain, Segun Musa Tells Customs

The National Deputy President, Air Logistics of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, NAGAFF, Dr. Segun Musa has said that stakeholders are no longer comfortable with the unnecessary publicity over seizures and monthly revenue collection.

Musa who made this assertion while reacting to a report on 139 trailer loads of rice and other contraband confiscated by the Federal Operations Unit Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS in Lagos recently, stated that the act was shameful and subjected Nigeria to global ridicule.

According to him, “Such a ridiculous public announcement is the same as freight forwarders saying we have cleared out one container from the port or the NPA publicizing every vessel that reports in the ports or offloaded in the ports which is a routine exercise.

“Of what essence is the seizure publicity when the agency is having multiple dragging responsibilities that have not been addressed accordingly?

“The most unfortunate news we read in Nigeria about our customs are seizures and increased revenue targets as if these are the primary saddle responsibilities of the customs.

“I have implored the CGC to arrange stakeholders engagement aside from his ceremonial conference recently arranged in Lagos so that we can tell ourselves the truth if we truly want to move this nation forward.

“We globetrot regularly and it is shameful the way our customs are being classified and if the CGC (Comptroller General of Customs) wants to continue the usual way of the past CGCs, then it would be necessary we start calling for the privatization of the customs unless and otherwise he’s willing to embrace change and this is not about grammar but reality.”
