…Warns Tinubu led FG tending towards tyranny
The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, RULAAC has expressed concern over the increasing tendency of the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government towards tyranny, including the use of security agencies to intimidate and repress labour and civil society.
The Executive Director, RULAAC, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma who expressed the Centre’s concern in a statement on Wednesday stated that the arrest and detention of peaceful protesters, along with the invitation of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC President on alleged terrorism charges, suggested a troubling attempt to suppress civic engagement and dissent.
According to him, those actions were indicative of democratic backsliding adding that “Such actions undermine democratic principles, stifle free expression, and limit the ability of citizens to voice their concerns.”
“It is critical for a healthy democracy that individuals and organizations can operate freely without fear of harassment or repression”, he added.
Nwanguma, therefore, called on President Tinubu to prioritize upholding democratic principles by ensuring the protection of civil liberties and constitutional rights, which he said included safeguarding freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, as well as promoting transparency, accountability, and rule of law.
“By doing so, the government can strengthen democratic institutions, build public trust, and encourage civic engagement, which are essential for a thriving democracy”, he concluded.
