It was harvest of awards in Lagos yesterday for the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Widescope Group, Dr. Segun Musa as different organizations fall over themselves to present their awards to a man who has touched so many lives and improved the society.
Musa’s office at Ogba Lagos could not contain the number of people who troop in and out seeking to get an opportunity to present theirs to the Philanthropist cum social crusader.
Speaking shortly before decorating him with the gown, hood and hat, the Secretary General of UN – POLAC, Ambassador Dr. Mrs. Patricia described Dr. Musa as a man of peace who had touched so many lives which according to her, earned him the Honorary Doctoral Award as Peace Ambassador.
“We are here in the capacity as UN – POLAC Peace Advocates to present an honorary Doctoral Award to Dr. Musa Olusegun. It is our pleasure to be here and we are happy that we have been well received. The atmosphere is already signifying peace and we are looking forward to when we are going to hoist the UN and also the POLAC flag here which is going to make this place a peace zon, if he permits.
“So, what we are doing to Dr. Segun today is not just to confer him the award as an Honoris Causa based on his antecedent as a man of peace, those things you have been doing, touching lives. A lot of people are under his employ and when you are paying people, you are preaching peace, you are taking people off the streets. When you feed one person under you directly, that person is feeding another person who is also feeling another person.
“So, these are some of the things we looked at, politically, we have heard of all the things you have been doing, his charity programmes, philanthropy. We actually did a lot of background checks on him we received his nomination.
“When we came in and we saw the faces coming in, how they were relating, it’s as if they are family, this person knows this person and this person knows the other person. It shows that Dr. Segun is not just an ordinary individual. These are the things we look out for when you are bringing in somebody as a Peace Advocate. So,sir, you are already a Peace Advocate”, she said.
Speaking on the background of UN – POLAC, Patricia who is also the Programmes Director of the organization said, “We are the United Nations POLAC organization. We have been in existence in Nigeria since 2010.
“Initially, the POLAC started from Paris in 2000 during the UN General Assembly’s declaration designating the Year 2000 to 2010 as a decade of peace. That is where we emanated from and in Nigeria, we have over 5,000 members. It’s a membership organization.
“We are already working on the youth, in Lagos State, we have been to schools. We have our school readiness programme. We are also trying to tidy up our programmes for this year.”
Responding, the highly elated Dr. Musa who is also the Chief Consultant of the Global Transport Policy thanked the organization for the honour done him adding that he loved to identify himself with any cause that seeks to promote peace and global understanding.
According to him, ‘’I have been always associated with so many organizations that have anything to do with global peace and understanding. Talking about the Rotary, I am a Paul Harris Fellow like you read in my citation and Paul Harris is all about peace, charity, humanity, it all about world understanding and anything that is related to peace, I am always delighted in participating in it.
“I want to say that your organization is actually expanding very fast. I have read about you before accepting this honorary Doctoral Award and I decided to accept it because I also like to support anything that has to do with world understanding and peace.
“I will discuss with my team and will ensure that one out of our foundations will give you maximum backing. We will not just be your ambassador, we will represent you very well and will promote all your ideals so that everybody can get to know you better.”
Musa maintained that in a world where there’s no peace and understanding, it’s always chaotic and full of crisis saying, “when you look at the global crisis, you will realize that there’s no need for it. In a situation where we have the understanding, we have love among ourselves, and everybody has a source of livelihood, there won’t be crisis.”
“So, many factors are responsible for crisis, especially the global crisis that we are all observing, greed, hunger and a whole lot of things. But if we start educating ourselves, and beyond education, if we start supporting ourselves, support is the word. If somebody can eat, if someone can have something to do on a daily basis, they will not think of crisis, they will not think of crime because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
“And so, if organizations like yours and others could come together, to ensure people are gainfully employed, they have source of livelihood and they are busy at all time, we will minimize the crisis that we observe across the world”, he added.
Appreciating the organization further, he assured that, “I am going to start propagating your message because there’s need for us to be peace ambassadors even without being conferred individually with the honorary Doctoral Award, in our heart of hearts, we must have that spirit of creating a peaceful environment.
“Some of us will be decorated and some of us will not be decorated but we are all ambassadors of peace, let’s continue to promote peace, world understanding, happy environment so that at the end of the day, the world will be a peaceful place for each and everyone of us to live in.”
Others who presented awards to Dr. Segun Musa included the Congress of Maritime Editors and Publishers, CONMEP, Africa’s Living Legend Hall of Fame, Nigeria Economic Growth Forum and Cornell Media Consult.
