The Sea Empowerment and Research Centre, SEREC has congratulated women operating in the Nigerian maritime industry as the World marks the 2025 International Women’s Day, IWD, praising their dedication, expertise and perseverance to succeed in the male dominated industry.

In a statement in Lagos on Saturday, the Head of Research of the Centre, Dr. Eugene Nweke observed that the Centre recognized the vital roles women play in advancing the maritime industry while acknowledging the challenges overcome in a traditionally maled dominated sector.

He said, “By actively supporting and mentoring one another, women in maritime have created a ripple effect of positive change, driving innovation, progress, and inclusivity.

“As we celebrate these achievements, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering the next generation of women in maritime. We will actively work to break down barriers, challenge biases, and create opportunities for women to succeed. We believe in their abilities and are committed to supporting their growth and development.”

Nweke further maintained that women in maritime embody the pioneering spirit, pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons adding that, “They are role models for women and girls everywhere, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, they can succeed in any field.”

“As we celebrate the International Women’s Day, we’re reminded that the momentum for change is unstoppable. Together, we’ll continue to drive progress and create a brighter future for all”, he added.

He also charged the women in maritime to actively work together to create a more inclusive and diverse industry, demand change and push for policies supporting women’s empowerment as well as celebrate each other’s achievements and support one another in pursuing excellence.

He, thereafter, urged women in maritime to develop a robust mentorship succession program to address the impending age gap in the next decade.
