Comrade Francis Bunu was yesterday elected as the President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, MWUN for the next four years in a unanimous decision at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference in Lagos.
This is just the immediate past President General, Comrade Prince Adewale Adeyanju was declared the Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT of MWUN by the new President General, Bunu.
Bunu, who until his emergence yesterday as the new President General of MWUN, was the immediate past Deputy President General of the union.
He was elected unopposed alongside eleven others namely: Abubakar Bello – Deputy President General; Taofeek Dahiru – Deputy President General; Funmi Fasan – Deputy President General; Ganiu Dosunmu – Vice President General; Ibrahim Ohize – Vice President General and Martina Njoku – Vice President General.
Others include: Boniface Udoh – Vice President General; Mukhaila Lawal – Treasurer; Raji Abdulateef – National Trustee; Obidoma David – National Trustee and Robert Eze – National Auditor.
Speaking shortly after his election, Comrade Bunu expressed gratitude to the Union for the faith and confidence reposed in him, culminating in his emergence as the President General unopposed.
He thanked his predecessor, Comrade Adeyanju for being instrumental to his emergence and members of the Union for the peace and unity that existed all through the electioneering campaign.
The New President General called for stakeholders’ collaboration with the so as to facilitate the growth and development of the nation’s maritime industry.
He explained that Comrade Adeyanju’s emergence as the Chairman of BoT of the union was in line with the constitution which provided that any outgoing President General of the union automatically emerges Chairman of the Board.
The newly elected President General expressed satisfaction over the industrial peace that existed during the electioneering process, adding that the outgoing President General’s sterling performance locally and internationally, will not be forgotten in a hurry.
On his part, Adeyanju called on members from the four branches of MWUN to work closely with the new President General, urging them to extend the same respect accorded him to the new helmsman.
Adeyanju assured that Bunu’s administration had what it takes to surpass past administrations considering the caliber of personalities in the new executives.
He affirmed that continuity should be the watchword under the new administration, while appealing for the executives from the units, districts, branch and national across the four branches to respect the leadership of Comrade Bunu.
Although the highpoint of the delegates conference was the emergence of the new national executives as declared by the Congress, the event also featured the presenting of awards to distinguished MWUN leaders and partners who have supported the union’s cause over the years and a book launch chronicling the history of the union from 1996 to 2024.
The event was also graced by several maritime bigwigs including; the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola; former President, Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Olayiwola Shittu; Chairman, Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC), Mr. Bolaji Sunmola; President, Nigerian Association of Master Mariners (NAMM), Capt. Tajudeen Alao; Chairman, Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), Chief Remi Ogungbemi; among others.
