The National Compliance Joint Taskforce of Licensed Clearing Agents, NCJTFCLA has appealed to the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi to reconsider the policies governing the importation of used vehicles through designated land borders, specifically Seme and Idiroko borders.
The group in a statement signed in Lagos on Sunday by its National President, High Chief Dr. Basil Nwolisa observed that it position aimed to curb the rampant smuggling of vehicles through unauthorized routes which he said had resulted in substantial revenue loss to the government.
The group maintained that allowing the importation of used vehicles within acceptable age limits through designated land borders could significantly boost revenue for the nation.
It further recommended that opening those borders could help regulate the flow of vehicles, reducing the influx of smuggled vehicles and illicit goods, including dangerous weapons.
“This move aligns with the Nigeria Customs Service’s modernization efforts, as seen in the launch of the B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, designed to enhance trade efficiency and transparency.
“By permitting the importation of standard commercial vehicles, we can fill the existing deficits, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic growth and improving the quality of life for Nigerians.
“We believe that this initiative will not only enhance revenue collection but also promote a more efficient and transparent customs administration. We look forward to your consideration of this proposal”, NCJTFCLA said.
