The Association of Registered Freight Forwarders Nigeria, AREFFN has hailed the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi over his election as the Chairman, World Customs Organization, WCO Council recently in far away Brussels.
The association, in a statement signed by Alhaji Bala Lawan Daura and Ichie Frank Obiekezie, National President and National Secretary respectively, in Lagos on Friday, described the emergence of Adeniyi as the Chairman, WCO Council as a testament to his exceptional leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to enhancing global customs standards and practices.
AREFFN noted that Adeniyi’s inspiring leadership capacity, astute administration, key agenda, the reinvigoration of the modernization of customs processes and efficient implementation of government policies were clear signs that Adeniyi was taking the NCS to a higher pedestal.
It maintained that Adeniyi’s vast experience and profound understanding of the complexities of international trade and customs would undoubtedly bring a fresh perspective to the organization.
“This is a remarkable achievement not only for you but also for Nigeria as it signifies our nation’s growing influence in the global arena.
“As you embark on this new chapter, we are confident that your vision will guide the World Customs Organization towards innovative solutions and collaborative partnerships that benefit all member countries”, the association said.
While commending CGC Adeniyi’s commitment to Customs modernization, transparency, and regional trade integration, AREFFN pledged its continued support for initiatives that promote efficiency across the export and maritime sectors.
“As CGC Adeniyi takes on his new role, AREFFN is confident that his visionary leadership will continue to drive positive change and promote economic growth in the region”, AREFFN stated.
It will be recalled that during a high-level meeting of the World Customs Organisation, WCO Council at Brussels in June 2025, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR was unanimously elected as Chairperson of the WCO Council, the highest decision-making body in global customs administration.
The election was held during the concluding session of the 145th/146th WCO Council Meetings held on Saturday, 28th June, 2025, at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels.
CGC Adeniyi succeeds Edward Kieswetter, Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, and becomes the first Nigerian to hold this prestigious office since the WCO’s establishment.
