The Sea Empowerment Research Centre headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria has been admitted as an official member of Ocean Centres Ghana, a regional initiative established through a partnership between the United Nations, UN Global Compact Network Ghana and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
In a letter dated 30th October, 2025 which was sighted by Primetime Reporters, Nana Kwabena Boakye-Boampong, Country Lead, Ocean Centres Ghana, UN Global Compact Network Ghana, confirmed SEREC’s enrollment as an official member of Ocean Centres Ghana, a multi-stakeholder collaboration platform, established through a partnership between the UN Global Compact and Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
As a member, according to Boakye-Boampong, SEREC would have access to opportunities to contribute to and influence high-level dialogues shaping safer, more sustainable ocean economies in the Centres’ four Action Areas namely Shipping and Ports, Fishing and Aquaculture, Offshore Renewables, and Finance an Investment; invitations to 10 targeted workshops (8 in-country and 2 cross-country); a national network that facilitates the co-creation of innovative projects tailored to local priorities and sector needs.
Other benefits include spaces to engage with national and international peers, experts, and stakeholders as well as guidance and tools to integrate safety and sustainability into your operations — enhancing alignment with global best practices and appeal to responsible investors or sponsor.
“In the coming months, Ocean Centres Ghana will organise a series of workshops, some held in person in a hybrid format and others fully online, ensuring that all members can participate. When unable to attend the in-person sessions, members will always have the option to join online.
“As a next step, we invite you to take an active role in these workshops — contributing case studies, experiences, questions, insights, and any barriers you have identified in relation to safety challenges within the four Action Areas mentioned above. Together, we will explore practical pathways and co-create solutions that address these challenges effectively and sustainably in our country.
“We thank you for joining this unique, locally-led and globally connected initiative. Your expertise, commitment, and leadership will be instrumental in shaping ocean industries that are inclusive, resilient, safe, and sustainable — for the benefit of people, economies, and the planet.
“Should you have any questions or wish to discuss your engagement in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
“We look forward to working with you and to achieving great impact together”, Boakye-Boampong said.
Reacting to the development, the Director General of the Sea Empowerment Research Centre, Mr. Francis Uchechukwu Aniezechukwu observed that the recognition marked a significant milestone in SEREC’s ongoing mission to promote safety, sustainability, and innovation across Africa’s maritime and blue economy sectors.
“This membership underscores our dedication to advancing safer and more sustainable ocean economies in Nigeria and across the region. It opens new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and regional leadership in ocean governance”, Aniezechukwu submitted.
The UN Global Compact, through the Ocean Centres platform, seeks to accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by bringing together diverse organizations to tackle maritime safety and sustainability issues at both local and global scales.
With this milestone, SEREC reinforces its position as a leading voice in maritime research, advocacy, and policy development across West Africa.
