Former Lagos Speaker, 49 others arrested over murder of Police officer

…Arrest seven for conspiracy, armed robbery

A former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joko Pelumi and 49 other suspects have been arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Police command in connection with the murder of a Police officer, DSP Akingboju Akindele.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi who made this known in a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Lagos on Monday, recalled that a team of Anti Cultism Policemen attached to Area ‘N’ Ijede, were on the 27th October, 2018, attacked while trying to effect arrest of some suspected cultists leading to the death of a police officer, DSP Akingboju Akindele.

Edgal noted that investigation into the case led to the arrest of forty nine (49) suspects including a former Speaker.

He however stated that all the arrested suspects were currently being investigated at SCIID Panti, Yaba and would be charged to court today.

In a related development, the Lagos State Police command has confirmed the arrest of seven persons in connection with unauthorized withdrawal of an undisclosed sum of money at the Stanbic Bank, Alaba Branch, using the Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi who addressed the press at the command’s headquarters, in Lagos on Monday, information was received from a credible source at 12.30am on the 7th of October, 2018 that some armed men were sighted making unauthorized withdrawal at Stanbic Bank, Alaba Branch, using the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and that the armed men were suspected to be robbers who may have stolen ATM cards from unsuspecting members of the public.

He disclosed that on receipt of the information, operatives from Ojo Police Station and FSARS Ikeja swiftly mobilized to the scene where they arrested two of the robbers while others escaped.

“They were immediately searched and in the process, one Diamond and UBA Banks ATM cards and one Nokia Phone belonging to a victim were recovered and the suspects gave their names as Olalekan Ayoola and Sodiq Olalere.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed to belong to a group of armed robbers popularly called “Blue Water Boys” and that they have been terrorizing residents of Ojo, Agric, Okokomaiko, Ajangbadi, Ijanaiji, Iba and its environs.

“They further confessed to have robbed the owner of a restaurant at Araromi Street, Iba and in the process they dispossessed the victim of some ATM cards and phones. One of the suspects, Olalekan Ayoola claimed to be a specialist in hacking into bank accounts using victims’ ATM cards, SIM cards, Voters’ cards and Drivers’ license”, the CP said.

He further pointed out that the confession of the suspects led to the arrest of other gang members who gave their names as Ayobami Adebayo (aka Label Money) ‘m’ Aged 21 years, Mufutau Ibrahim (aka Shakushaku) ‘m’ Aged 25 years, Ogundiran Adeniyi (aka MM Papa) ‘m’ Aged 24 years, Emmanuel Chukwu (aka Makabelly) ‘m’ Aged 25 years and Dare Oyetola (aka Paper) ‘m’ Aged 32 years.

While informing that the suspects were arrested from various locations and their arms and ammunition recovered, he listed the exhibits recovered from them to include; one Diamond Bank ATM Card; one UBA Bank ATM Card; one Black Nokia Touch Light Phone; one Samsung Galaxy Phone and one Infinix Hot 4 Phone;

Others include; two Laptops; one iPhone 7 plus Phone; one Asus Laptop Computer; four(4) cut to size single barrel locally made Gun; thirteen (13) unexpended live cartridges and one Expended cartridge.
