Police arrest four suspected teenage cultists in Anambra, recover firearm

…Nab another 44 for cultism in raids on hideouts

The operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to the Anambra State Police command have arrested four teenage cultists namely; Chinedu Umera, 18, Uboh Oluebube, 16, Obute Chinwendu, 17 and Chukwuma Amazu, 18 for cultism and rape.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Haruna Mohammed who disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Awka informed that the suspects and two others now at large went to Anglican Girls School, Oba on the 17th July, 2019 at about 5:pm, drugged and abducted a 14 years old girl, took her to a building at Oba, robbed and threatened her with two double barrel guns and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her for two consecutive days.

Mohammed added that the suspects confessed to be members of Junior Vikings (JVC) noting that the two arms had been recovered from them as exhibits.

He disclosed that the victim was taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention and that the case was under investigation after which suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, in a bid to further stem the tide of cultism and other nefarious activities in the state, the operatives of Operation Puff-Adder of the Anambra State Police command in conjunction with Special Anti-cultism Unit (SPACS) had arrested forty-four suspected cultists in a raid carried out in various parts of the state.

SP Haruna Mohammed who disclosed this in a statement in Awka gave the breakdown of the arrest as follows; 6 suspected cultists arrested on 22nd July, 2019 at Ihembosi axis, 6 arrested on 23rd July, 2019 at Ukwulu axis while 8 were arrested on 24th July, 2019 at Anaku axis.

Others include; 2 suspected cultists arrested on 25th July, 2019 at Omor axis, 2 suspected arrested on 26th July, 2019 at Nteje axis, 8 suspected cultists arrested on 27th July, 2019, at Oko whereas 12 suspected cultists were arrested on 28th July, 2019 at Ogidi/Obosi axis.

“From all the raids carried out, a total of 44 suspects were arrested out of which 10 suspects were screened out, 10 charged to court while 24 others are undergoing investigation.

“Meanwhile, exhibits recovered from the suspects who confessed being members of different secret cult groups includes, 4 improvised bunkers, 6 machetes , 1 axe, 1 butchers’ short knife, a bundle of foil, 1 packet of razler and some quantity of dry weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa”, Mohammed said.
