Police rescue nine after bus plunged into Nnobi River

…As one dies, four others injured in accident

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, CP John Abang yesterday visited the scene of accident that occurred along Ideani /Nnobi Road in Idemili South Local Government Area of state.

A statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed indicated that the accident occurred on Tuesday at about 8pm involving a Petroleum Tanker MACK with Reg. No. LEH 37 XA, a Mercedez Benz lorry with Reg. No. XM 370 ENU, an L300 bus with Reg. No. XG 680 FGG and a J5 bus with Reg. No. NH 148 ARL that plunged into River Nnobi along with its occupants as a result of the accident.

The statement disclosed that Police patrol team led by Divisional Police Officer, Nnobi Division visited  the scene, rescued  the victims and rushed them to Moon and Fatima Hospitals, Nnobi with the assistance of locals.

It added that although no life was lost, a total of nine victims were responding to treatment out of which one was critically injured and admitted at the intensive care unit of the Fatima hospital.

“The driver of the Mercedes Benz lorry, one James Eze, aged 30 years of No. 6 Eze Lane, Okpoko who was alleged to be the main cause of the accident was arrested and case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident”, it said.

In a related development, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police command, CP John Abang also visited the scene of fatal accident involving a commuter bus with Registration number JMT 94 XL and 911 truck with registration number XB 733 GDD at Boromew Roundabout which occurred at about 8am yesterday.

A statement from SP Haruna Mohammed informed that Police MTD personnel attached to inland town Division rushed five victims to St. Charles Boromew Hospital, Onitsha where one male victim whose identity was yet to be ascertained was certified dead by the medical doctor while four others were responding to treatment.

“Corpse deposited at the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination and case is under investigation”, the statement said.
